“There has been a great need for a kirtan songbook as well-researched and as comprehensive as this one. I have yet to see anything that comes close. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to deepen their practice, no matter what level they are at.”

I especially enjoyed the generous compilation of chants and their translations, something that will come in handy for those who wish to have lyrics for their music compositions. I was looking for deeper understanding of kirtan music and this was just what I wanted to get my hands on. I'm a student of music theory, mostly studying modal Western music and the circle of fifths. Not many teachers break musical concepts down very easily - most of them will load you down with a lot of memorization instead of teach you root concepts to grow and practice from in ways that feel musical. This book, on the other hand, is easily accessible, and it helped me know what was going on - and the scales are so interesting to try!
My impression was greatly enhanced recently when my next-door neighbors saw it on my music stand and were drawn to it - they had it open and I was able to teach them right out of it very easily. Singing sa-re-ga on the different scales and going right into the chants was a breeze. Highly recommended. -Daniel R., Austin, TX |
"This is a delightful handbook--informative, well organized and beautifully presented. As someone with little background in kirtans but highly schooled in Western music I especially appreciated the harmonium section, which compares Indian and Western scales. I also found the Sanskrit pronunciation guide very thorough, clear and helpful. I'm happy to have this wonderful little book in my library."
